La Mancha is a designation of origin for wines from a large wine-growing area that occupies a large part of the provinces of Toledo , Albacete , Cuenca and Ciudad Real , in the Spanish autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha .
Watered by the Guadiana , Tajo and Júcar rivers, it is the largest vineyard in the world with some 400,000, 500,000 or 600,000 hectares of vines, of which around 170,000 are covered by the La Mancha DO, which also makes it the designation of origin with the largest number of registered vineyards in all of Spain, which is why it is known as "The Winery of Europe". In total it includes 182 municipalities and more than 250 wineries, many of them of colossal dimensions.
This name was registered with the European Union on June 13, 1986. 3 4 It has also been registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization since June 22, 2021. 5
